Getting Married Wearing Black

Vera Wang, Fall 2012

Would you get married in a color other than white?  Traditionally in many cultures, white is not necessarily the color of choice.  In China, India and Vietnam brides usually wear red.  But in western cultures like in America, Canada and England, brides usually wear a white or ivory wedding gowns.  It has long been associated with purity or a sign of virginity.

It comes as a big surprise that one of the most famous bridal gown designers in the world, Vera Wang, recently created a collection of wedding dresses that included shades of charcoal, black and grey.  The traditional whites were also shown but several pieces were dark with a hint of romance and contrast of bone and nude tones.  It was certainly one of her most interesting collections that will have an influence in the bridal business for seasons to come.

What do you think? Would you wear a black wedding gown?

Supermodel Kate Moss wed musician Jamie Hince on July 1, 2011.  Moss was wearing a cream colored gown designed by John Galliano.  The dress was stunning with a sheer skirt that had gold embroidered leaves.  Clearly a style fit for Kate.  It was a surprise to some that the bride would choose Galliano considering his recent trouble resulting from his anti-Semetic remarks.

According to WWD, Moss has had a longtime friendship with Galliano.  As a model, she has been his biggest muse.  He's created dresses for other major events in her life including her 21st birthday and 30th birthday.  Despite his current circumstances, it was reported he didn't want to let the supermodel down on her big day.

Knee-Length Wedding Dresses

Typically when you think of wedding gowns most women imagine a long dress that makes them feel like a princess.  A dress that's unlike any other they have worn in their life.  As weddings have become more modern and some even casual, the dress isn't always as traditional.  Women want a dress they can feel comfortable in and sometimes even wear again.  (Maybe not).  Some of the knee-length styles almost look like a cocktail dress you could wear to any black tie affair.

What are your thoughts on knee-length wedding dresses?

Vera Wang Bridesmaid Collection

A long standing fear has been the idea of having to wear a horrible bridesmaid dress.  Just think of the movie 27 Dresses where actress Katherine Heigl's character, Jane, displays the array of pieces she's been subject to wear as a bridesmaid.  But, if you're lucky enough to have your frocks designed by respected bridal designer, Vera Wang, you can't go wrong.  Wang recently revealed her collaboration with David's Bridal stores.  The collection features seven pieces that are available in various shades including charcoal, champagne, amethyst and orchid.  The dresses will be available at 250 David's Bridal retailers in June.  Wang's dresses evoke a more youthful look for a more contemporary bridesmaid.
