NEWS | Gucci Loses its rights to Logo in the UK

Who would have thought that non-use would be deemed a reason for revoking a brand's identity.  When it comes to fashion and brands, a logo is just as important in identifying the company as the clothing is.  Gucci's interlocking G was first registered for use in the UK for clothing, handbags, cosmetics and watches in 1984.  British law states that if a logo is unused within five years the trademark can be revoked.  That is exactly what has just happened to Gucci.  The UK Intellectual Property Office has deemed they can only use the logo for fragrances and soaps.  The company has attempted to prove they have used the logo through providing sales figures however, the IPO feels the evidence provided is not strong enough and to prove use of the logo in the UK.

  What was your favorite dress at the Grammy Awards?  One of my favorites was the emerald green couture dress worn by Solange Knowles.  This is the color of the moment and she certainly made a statement accenting it with her bright pink shoes.  Personally I loved the Georges Chakra gown worn by Kelly Rowland.  The way the geometric lines of sheer panels accented her body giving it curves in the right places was beautiful.  It was, however, borderline defying the rules that CBS had set just days before.  There was a decency code that was sent out ordering the attendees to keep themselves covered up so as not to expose too much flesh.   An excerpt from the note sent out to the celebrities stated, "Bare sides or under curvature of the breasts is also problematic....Please avoid sheer see-through clothing that could possibly expose female breast nipples. Please be sure the genital region is adequately covered so that there is no visible 'puffy' bare skin exposure."

  It's not surprising that the network would be feeling the need to say something considering that it seems every year the dresses are baring more and more. Who could forget the infamous deep-v green Versace dress Jennifer Lopez wore that made headlines in 2000 when she attended with then boyfriend Sean 'Puffy' Combs (Now known as Diddy).

Gucci Spring 2013

Frida Giannini brought a soft flirtatiousness to Gucci for its spring 2013 collection.  Taking cues from the 1970s, tunic suits, loose trousers and caftans were the core ingredients in this collection.  Silhouettes were Japanese-inspired with billowing ruffles and bell sleeves.

Giannini said she was inspired by the portraits shot by photographers Richard Avedon and Gian Paolo Barbieri.  The color story included salmon, cobalt blue, crisp white and yellow.  Styling throughout the show was minimal however, necklines were decorated with brightly colored, chunky necklaces.  

The few printed items were vivid, over-sized patterns on simple styles.  This was a collection about living in vivid color and comfort with an air of easy elegance.  A certain gracefulness to each piece as the models strutted down the runway with ruffles floating.

Overall Gucci's spring had a consistent theme.  It didn't have a wide variety of design elements but rather, a strong sense of  a few ideas.  A sense of ease, it was all about the sleeve, ruffle and clean lines.  Trousers were fluid yet lean, dresses feminine and simple while the suits were classy with a leisure inspired feel.  It was an illustration of a bright and breezy lifestyle.

Gucci Celebrates 90 Years

  Founded by Guccio Gucci in 1921, The House of Gucci celebrates its 90th birthday this year.  What better way to mark the occasion than by honoring the company's history with the grand opening of a museum.  Gucci Museo opens this week to the public in Florence, Italy in the Piazza della Signora.

  Gucci President and CEO, Patrizio di Marco told Women's Wear Daily, "...the museum is an homage to the city.  Although Gucci is a truly international company, we are a Florentine success story."  Gucci's commitment to preserving the art and culture of Florence is evident in its commitment to donate 50 percent of ticket sales to support restoring artistic monuments in the city.

  Celebrities and industry people were invited to the private party on Monday celebrating the museum's grand opening.  Vogue magazine's Anna Wintour was on hand for the exciting occasion.

  The museum features the many iconic pieces that have fueled the Gucci brand over the years.  Items displayed include leather luggage, several styles of bamboo handle bags, evening gowns, an exhibit showcasing the evolution of the Gucci logo and the limited edition 1979 Cadillac Seville that was designed by Aldo Gucci, the founder's son.
